Features of Sultans’ Mosques

  • Huge mosques
  • Small place for sultans inside the mosques
  • Having more than one minaret
  • Extra lights straightened between minarets in Ramadan month.
  • Being suitable for worship all day and night

First examples of sultans’ mosques were constructed in Bursa. Specifically, Great mosque and Green mosque became prototypes built. On the other hand, Fatih Mosque was the first of sultans’ mosques in Istanbul. But, Fatih Mosque was rebuilt in 18th century after an earthquake. Therefore, Bayezid mosque is the first mosque of sultans’  nowadays. By the way, Bayezid Mosque was located at Bayezid Square.
